Research

Task 1 – Secondary Source

Secondary research is information that comes from a source which is in a permanent form. It could be in the form of:

  • Websites
  • Magazines
  • Newspapers
  • Blogs
The image below is an example of research that I carried out. I used this information as a source of research for unemployment presentation. I learned from this research that unemployment has reached two million.
Task 2

BARB

This is an example of quantitative data from BARB. It shows you daily and weekly statistics of the total viewing.

BARB is a organization and a commercial enterprise that provides information on TV audiences and TV viewings. They estimate the total viewings of the UK TV audience and broadcast this information on there website www.barb.co.uk/. This means that they are gather data for there business and potentially sell the information to advertisers who are interested in finding out there viewing figures. However, the information that is displayed on there website www.barb.co.uk/ could be argued as inaccurate. BARB doesn’t specify if the information is based on a small amount of viewing or a vast amount.

Pearl and Dean

This is an example of quantitative data from Pearl and Dean. It shows the statistics of the amount of people who attend the cinema based of 15+, Family and Art House. Population and Cinema Audience are what part of the research is based on.

Pearl and Deane is a cinema advertising company that promotes films that have been released in the cinema. They represent other multiplex cinema chains such as Empire and Apollo. As well as promoting films they also statistically gather information about the films such as sells, the age; class and gender of the people who attend the cinema and the total amount of tickets that the cinema has sold. They also release information on the best selling films of a certain year and the weekend. Pearl and Deane sell to others cinema chains and companies.

The images above is an example of the information that Pearl and Dean have gathered. As you can see they have stated the name of the film, the film’s distributor and the total amount that the film has made over the course of the year.

Channel 4

This is an example of quantitative data from Channel 4. It shows the statistics of the audience share on Monday 12th March 2012. It shows how many people aged from 16-34 watched television on C4, BBC1, ITV and Five.

The image above is information on a researcher job at 4Talent. In the paragraphs above it, it tells us that a researcher is to make sure that filming permissions and consent forms are obtained by the researcher. The researcher job description also tells you that need to be adaptable, be able to multi-task and work very quickly.

Gadget – PS Vita

What’s its best feature?
The PS Vita’s best features are:
  • 5 inch OLED screen
  • Dual Analogue Sticks
  • Rear Touch Pad
  • Six-axis Motion Sensors
  • Information taken from: http://hmv.com/hmvweb/displayProductDetails.do?sku=142230

What’s its worst feature?

Nearly every reviewer complains about the requirement for a memory card and Sony’s failure to include one with the Vita; they see it as a sneaky way to increase the overall price of the unit. They also complain that it is yet another Sony proprietary memory card, meaning that you have few options other than to buy Sony’s expensive cards. Games themselves come on yet another type of proprietary card, which is different from that used by the PSP (and are so tiny that they can be tricky to get in and out and are easy to misplace), though reviewers seem encouraged by Sony’s increasing reliance on download-able games. Note that games on physical media can be slow to load.

How does it work?
The PlayStation Vita is the evolution of the PSP. Taking all the lessons learnt and listening to fan feedback, Sony has created the Next Generation Portable that gamers on the go can enjoy. Vita players will be able to play alone or go online and compete against other players, whilst collecting trophies to show their skill. The Vita will offer gamers stunning graphics, in depth controls and unbelievable features not yet seen on a portable device as the Vita gives you the comforts of a home console, and more, in your pocket.

“One of the worst features that is on the PS Vita is the memory card storage. PlayStation fails to apply enough storage space for the gadget. This means that you as the buyer would have to go and buy your own memory card so that you can store all the games and music that you want on your PS Vita.”

“The PS Vita costs around £270 depending on what version of the PS Vita you are buying. If you want to buy the 3G; then you will be splashing out £270 and if you are buying the Wi-Fi version then you will be spending £220.”

“In order to make your experience with the PS Vita more fun, then you would need to buy certain extras for the game console. Chris has returned with what could be called his greatest comeback yet. ‘Turn Up The Music’ is a fast catchy song that will have you sing for days and days. 4. M.I.A – Bad Girls

M.I.A is back and this time she ain’t playing. “Bad Girls” is her new highly anticapted return single which seems to have everyone buzzing even celebrities. Rihanna tweeted ‘that Bad Girls is her favorite sh*t’, which coming from Rihanna can only be a good thing. The video which can only be described as a all female dominating war has got more than 7 million views on Youtube and is soon becoming M.I.A’s biggest hit. Check out her website: www.miauk.com/ for more info.

5. Coldplay – Charlie Brown

Chris Martin and the rest of the band mates have teamed up once again to release yet another confusing but totally catchy song. The slightly weird named song “Charlie Brown” (no relation to the snoopy cartoon) has been called one of Coldplay’s best songs. The video which features a multitude of luminous colours and  two very noticeable actors Shameless star Elliot Tittensor and Misfits star Antonia Thomas has quickly become one of the most watched videos ever gaining more than 700,000 views in just 24 hours. Check out Coldplay’s website: www.coldplay.com/ for more info.

5 Hot Albums:

Released: February 13, 2012

There’s nothing more pleasing than watching a British star rise high and become a success and that star is in the form of Emeli Sandé. With a strangely attractive hairstyle and a rather strange but Gothic presence, it is clear that she is talented and I reckon that not only would 2012 be Emeli’s year but it will be a year that she would won’t forget. 3. Coldplay – Mylo Xyloto

  • Released: 24 October 2011

Mylo Xyloto is the brand new album released by Coldplay. Not only does Chris Martin and his followers..erm I mean band mates excite us with catchy songs and bright colours but they also confuse us with the name as usual. This album however has broken records for Coldplay after selling 83,000 copies after one week digital sales. With Coldplay fans adoring songs such as ‘Charlie Brown, Paradise and Every Teardrop is a Waterfall’, we can’t help but love them too and that’s why Mylo Xyloto is one of my Hot Albums. Check out their website: www.coldplay.com/

4. Chris Brown – Fortune

  • Released: May 8th 2012

Mr. Chris Brown has returned with a brand new album that we shock the public and make his fans love him even more. Despite all the controversy over the past year or two, something tells me that Chris has finally grew up and put his music first. With a catchy first song ‘Turn up the music’  and a brand new attitude, something tells me that 2012 might just be Chris Brown’s year. Check out his website: www.chrisbrownworld.com/uk

5. Drake – Take Care

  • Released: November 15, 2011

Drake is one of the America’s hottest exports and this album that is on fire. With loads of features such as Nicki Minaj, Rihanna, Tyga and Lil’ Wayne, Drake somehow manages to blow us away with heavy beats and exploding lyrics. Singles such as “Take Care”, “HYFR”, “Marvin’s Room” “Headlines” and “Make Me Proud” have dominated the charts this year and Drake’s album looks to set as one of the best album’s of 2012. To hear more about Drake check out his website: www.drakeofficial.com/

5 Hot Artists:

1. StooShe

With a name like ‘StooShe’ you expect nothing more from these girls that fierceness and attitude which is exactly what you get. Karis, Courtney and Alexandra are 3 feisty girls from South East London whose only mission is to take over the world. Check out there website: http://www.stooshe.com/ and download there new song ‘Love Me’ ft. Travie McCoy. Watch out for there new album called ‘Swings & Roundabouts’ which will be released in June 2012.

2. Nicki Minaj

If you’ve been living underneath a rock or in a cave for the past year and a half and don’t know who Miss Nicki Minaj is; then get to know. Nicki Minaj has been hot on everyone’s lips and 2012 looks like the year that she will officially dominate. With her EP ‘Pink Friday: Roman’s Revenge’  set to storm the pop and hip-hop charts with songs like ‘Stupid Hoe’, ‘Starships’ and ‘Roman in Moscow’, Nicki is making it very clear that she is the boss and 2012 is her year. After being named 2011 rising star by Billboard, Nicki Minaj is becoming an icon. Check out her website: http://mypinkfriday.com and her brand new song ‘Starships’.

3. Mindless Behavior

It looks like 2012 is definetly ‘Year of the Boybands’ as a new boyband pops round the corner every month! This month we are excited to welcome across the pond; new boyband Mindless Behavior. Consisting of the members; Princeton, Ray Ray, Prodigy and Roc Royal theses boys have the perfect combination of dancing, singing and SWAG! They are bound for success and we can’t wait. Check out there website: http://www.mindlessbehavior.com/ and there new single: ‘Mrs. Right featuring Diggy Simmons’.

4. Maverick Sabre

Watch your back Plan B because Maverick Sabre is slowly but surely taking over your spot. This British soulful singer has the entire soul and R&B industry dying for more. His first single ‘Let Me Go’ took the nation by storm and every since then we just can get enough of Maverick Sabre. Check out his website http://www.mavericksabre.com/.

5. Rita Ora

After being dubbed the “new Rihanna”, Rita Ora has a lot to live up to. Her debut collaboration song with DJ Fresh ‘Hot Right Now’ has got the world on there feet and jumping which is a good sign for Rita seeing as she hasn’t even release any solo material yet. Her brand new album and single is soon to be released and I can’t wait to here what she has to offer the music industry. Check out her website: http://rocnation.com/ritaora/ and download ‘Hot Right Now’ by DJ Fresh featuring Rita Ora or ‘R.I.P’ which features Tinie Tempah.

5 Not Hot Songs:

1. Madonna – Give Me All Your Luvin’ ft. Nicki Minaj & M.I.A

What on earth was Madonna thinking when she decided to make this song?! Let’s be honest, this song is a complete and utter mess. Despite Madonna teaming up with the two hottest females in Rap music, somehow she still seems to disappoint us with the American football themed song. Listening to a 50 year old lady talking about getting some luvin’ seriously churns all our stomach. I think I speak for everyone when I say…Hang up your stocking Madonna!

2. Marcus Collins – Seven Nation Army

We are officially declining this THE worst song of 2012. Marcus has officially tarnished the reputation of The White Stripes. This jazzy version of the ultimate rock anthem is a sham to all rock fans all over the world. I officially have nothing more to say about this song other than it is a disaster!

3. Alyssa Reid – Alone Again

This up-and-coming Canadian singer forgot the first rule of covering a legendary pop song…MAKE IT YOUR OWN! This song has pretty much ruined Alyssa Reid’s career and I don’t even think she knows it. I myself can admit that I have listened to the song several times and I was completely taken back by what has to be the worst rapping I have ever heard in a pop sing. Many people might disagree with me but personally I think this song deserves the right to be on the Top 5 Not So Hot Songs. Sorry Alyssa!

4. Alexandra Burke – Elephant

Alex, Alex, Alex! No one and when I say no one, I mean no one is feeling you or this song at all. The X Factor winner seriously got this one wrong and we recommend that she stays away from clubland anthems and gets back to her R’n’B classics. Despite Elephant storming to no. 2 on the official charts, somehow this song just doesn’t tickle my pickle and that’s why it has landed on my 5 not so hot songs.

5. Nicki Minaj – Stupid Hoe

With her being one of hip-hop most praised possessions, I personally feel that this song is a sham to all hip hop female rappers everywhere. It’s very very clear who she is referring to with this song (Lil’ Kim) and to be honest we don’t even care. Despite her new album, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded being highly anticipated; this song however slowly ‘grinds our gears’. The video; which in my opinion is a montage to all ghetto barbies everywhere display Miss Minaj to be even more crazy than we assumed! Nicki, please drop the barbie act and just go back to being the old “hip hop” you!

5 Not So Hot Albums:

1. Lana Del Rey – Born To Die

  • Released: January 27, 2012

Lana Del Rey’s album ‘Born to Die’ just proves that being highly anticipated does mean anything. It’s funny but rather sad to know that someone who is so talented could produce something so boring and dead. As they say ‘first impressions count’ and judging Lana off of this album, it doesn’t look like her future is gonna be bright at all.

2. The Ting Tings – Sounds From Nowhereville

  • Released: 24 February 2012

Surprisingly, no remembers nothing done by The Ting Tings except that infamous song ‘That’s Not My Name’. In the past 2 years The Ting Tings have been signed to Roc Nation, been nominated for several awards and have toured/gigged at several places; which in a small way has been a success for them. However deciding to record a new album has been much more of a failure. This album which apparently was released (which I don’t think anyone even heard of) has failure to chart any charts. Shame really!

3. Sean Paul – Tomahawk Technique

  • Released: January 27, 2012

Sean Paul is back with what seems to be his worst album to date. Despite the new hairstyle, this album clearly seems to Sean singing out of boredom. Unlike his previous albums Dutty Rock, The Trinity and Imperial Blaze, this albums doesn’t have the creativity that the last 3 albums had and fails to excite me. ‘She Doesn’t Mind’ which is Sean’s first single to be release off of this album has been storming the charts entering at number 2 in the UK. However just because the song is doing okay, doesn’t mean the album is. Sean, please find the old you are bring him back to your music.

4. Marcus Collins – Marcus Collins

  • Released: March 12, 2012

Let’s face it. We all love to watch reality TV hopefuls fall flat on their face and this album proves us right. Poor Marcus. This album simply stinks of remakes and soppy original tracks that sound like a 5 year wrote them which for any X Factor finalists is pretty low. His first single, which is a remake of ‘Seven Nation Army’ by the White Strips has us all pulling our hair out. For future reference Marcus, take a leaf out of Leona’s book; wait for us to like you first and then release some music.

5. Madonna – MDNA

  • Released: March 23, 2012

Despite this album receiving good reviews from most critics, it’s not really doing it for me. This album ‘MDNA’ is Madonna’s 12th album and to be honest with you I think it’s time for her to stop. So many divas have come and gone however Madonna seems to stand her ground and refuses to give up her crown to anyone. Trying to use ‘relevant’ musicians like Nicki Minaj and M.I.A is not going to help you Madonna. This album to me is a disaster and if she doesn’t stop soon she will ‘eventually’ ruin her own career. Fingers crossed!

Not So Hot Artists:

1. Willow Smith

Despite her father being one of the world’s best actors, unfortunately her music doesn’t live up to “Hollywood” standards. There’s nothing more annoying that hearing an 11 year old rich kid pretending to be 15 years old. Word to the wise Willow, child stars never last. It’s time to put down the microphone and pick up the school books.

2. Rebecca Ferguson

This X-Factor finalist just isn’t cutting it for me or the rest of the music industry. Despite her first song being quite catchy and her album being critically acclaimed, Rebecca Ferguson should stick to what she knows best, Motherhood. I was never a fan of hers even when she was on the X-Factor and I’m still not a fan now.

3. Tulisa

The only female member from N-Dubz is going it alone. Since the announce that N-Dubz has officially split, Tulisa or ‘The Female Boss’ as she likes to be known has recorded an album and has released a single. Usually in situations like this I would be rooting for who can overcome a group split however this is different. “Young” which is her début solo single reached number 1 in the UK official charts. Personally I find the song to be quite catchy however that’s not what erks me about Tulisa. This ‘Female Boss’ thingy that she keeps flaunting in everyone face is the most annoying phrase/tagline any celebrity could give to themselves. Not only that but her recent celebrity scandal as well as her Britain’s Got Talent performance has been nothing other than disturbing. Judging her performance on Britain’s Got Talent I have two words for Tulisa…Vocal Lessons!

4. Marcus Collins

Marcus Collins (also known as the dude who lost to 4 untalented girls) has decided to release an album and a single which is just as equally as bad as each other. Besides getting into twitter wars and making videos which all pretty much seem to all look the same, poor old Marcus has fallen out of our hearts. I guess being a X-Factor contestant isn’t exactly what we all imagined it to be. I’m not feeling Marcus or his jazzy versions of legendary pop songs and that is why he has ended up on my not so hot artist list.

5. One Direction

Directioners everywhere close your eyes because this article is about to make you cry! Unlike everyone else in this country and America, I HATE One Direction. They are a cheap version of The Wanted and to be honest there music is a 2 out of 10. Trying to follow in the footsteps of success British boy bands like Take That, The Wanted and Blue; One Direction to me feels like 5 schoolboys who have nothing better to do except make our ears bleed. There début album may have charted at No. 1 in America which made them the first British boy band to have a number one album in America since The Beatles. I’m not a fan of these boys and never will be.
